Liz is the lead Director for Higher Education at TBG and we are a ‘Preferred Supplier’ of Teesside University. We have experience of working with Deans, Assistant Deans, Directors, Section Heads, Programme Leads and Subject Leads – providing coaching, bespoke interventions, team development and workshops.

Jeanette Sumler-Hutchinson, Learning and Development Facilitator at the University writes:

“We have worked very successfully with TBG for over 5 years on both our Senior Management development and Academic Leadership programmes. Liz provides 1:1 coaching with staff across a variety of disciplines and levels of responsibility. The feedback we get from our staff is always excellent.

Liz has a clear understanding of the current issues facing HE and an engaging style that is appropriate for our staff groups. Her workshops are interactive and supported by great background reading and resources. Liz hasalways been responsive  to our needs and flexible in her style, which comes from her experience in both the workplace, and as a facilitator.

In the current climate you need to Know that you are getting value for money and I can say that in our experience TBG has always given us that.”

We are very aware that Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are feeling pressures placed on them by the economic downturn, policy changes, society’s demands and national and global competition. HEIs are, and will continue to be, operating in an increasingly challenging, competitive and complex climate for several years to come. Such times demand creative ideas and responses from academic staff – particularly those in the emerging management and leadership roles.

Innovative HEIs recognise the value in working with a Development Consultancy to:

  • Improve quality and effectiveness across their core ‘business’
  • Support and facilitate re-organisation
  • Deliver personal and professional development
  • Identify the significant cultural and behavioural changes that are needed in order to thrive in the new culture

A flagship of such activity is our proposed work with a Dean and Senior Management Team, to identify appropriately beneficial behaviours for Academic Staff in Leadership roles to equip them to successfully address the School’s strategic challenges. We will be using the Leadership Effectiveness Analysis ‘Strategic Directions Questionnaire’ from MRG (the Management Research Group) to facilitate this process. This will:

  • Define and describe Leadership by using the 22 Leadership Behaviours in the Leadership Effective Analysis
  • Connect Leadership to the School’s strategy, the future values and significantly the future challenges and opportunities
  • Align leadership roles and individuals to the School’s strategy
  • Understand, describe, assess and evaluate the Leadership behaviours and the cultures those behaviours create
  • Analyse the gap between existing and future leadership requirements
  • Focus on the development of leadership to deliver the identified strategy and face those future challenges and opportunities
  • Establish the criteria which enables us to define effectiveness and support the school to move towards a faster and more aligned cultural change which successfully delivers the strategy.

During the last four years TBG has also contributed, in associate-ship, to an Academic Leadership Programme, working with NLG Partners: www.nlgpartners.com

The development programme, for academic staff from six schools across the university, develops leadership effectiveness in support of leadership role challenges.

TBG involvement has been in the areas of:

  • Individual 360 Developmental Analysis feedback
  • Workshops on: Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI); Influencing Others; Motivating Others and Image and Presentation
  • Personal Coaching

Thus far, 134 participants who have engaged in cohorts of this programme

And consistent positive evaluation has resulted in the programme’s continuation.
